In the furniture industry, we often use the terms "sofa" and "couch" interchangeably, assuming they have the same meaning. However, the truth is that they are not synonyms. The distinction between a sofa and a couch lies in their names' origins and intended use.
At LushCovers, we recognise that most people use the words "sofa" and "couch" interchangeably so we tend to just use the word "sofa" so our customers don't get confused.
Technically, what is a "Sofa"?
AsĀ per the Oxford Dictionary, a sofa is defined as "a long upholstered seat usually with arms and a back for two or more people." While this definition is accurate, the term "sofa" has a more significant historical and cultural meaning.
In fact, "sofa" originates from the Turkish transliteration of the Arabic noun "suffah," which refers to a raised platform or bench for sitting. Traditionally, a suffah would be draped with carpets, blankets, and pillows.
The modern-day sofa reflects its origins as a bench-like piece of furniture with defined arms and a back. Like the draping of carpets and blankets on a suffah, sofas are typically upholstered. With a sturdy structure and prominent frame, they have a sophisticated appearance and are often placed in a living room, where they are associated with hosting formal occasions. Although some sofas may be designed for reclining, they are generally intended for upright seating
Technically, what is a "Couch"?
The definition of a couch, as per the Oxford Dictionary, is "a long, comfortable seat for two or more to sit on," which may sound similar to a sofa. However, the origin of the word reveals that a couch is not as similar to a sofa as one might think. The term "couch" is derived from the old French verb "couchier," which means "to lay down" or lounge. While a couch typically has a back and two armrests like a sofa, it does not necessarily have to. In fact, some couches may have only one arm or no arms at all.
Typically, a couch is a more relaxed piece of furniture often found in a den or a man cave. It is meant for lounging, and it is acceptable to eat chips on it or let dogs jump up on it. Guests might even crash on the couch when they stay overnight.
